Further Forces Programme 

In partnership with the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, Further Forces is a scheme to retrain 210 Armed Forces Service Leavers to teach technical subjects, including Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) in the Further Education (FE) and Skills Sector.

The programme is supported by the Department for Education, the Ministry of Defence, the Education & Training Foundation (ETF) and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and is delivered by the University of Portsmouth, the Association of Colleges (AoC) and the University of Brighton. 

After successful completion of this programme, as a Service Leaver, you will be eligible to apply for Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills (QTLS) status.

What subjects could I teach? 

Further Forces funds trainee teachers in all technical subject areas: • Agriculture, Environmental & Animal Care • Business and Administrative • Catering & Hospitality • Childcare & Education • Construction • Creative & Design • Digital • Engineering & Manufacturing • Hair & Beauty • Health & Science • Legal, Finance & Accounting • Protective Services • Sales, Marketing & Procurement • Social Care • Transport & Logistics

Potential recruits to the Education and Training Foundation-led and Ministry of Defence and Gatsby Foundation-supported Further Forces programme have until the end of March 2020 to complete their induction and orientation. This will allow recruits to begin Initial Teacher Education training by the end of September 2020 at the latest. No further recruitment will take place after 31 March 2020. Applicants should visit the 
Further Forces programme page for details of how to apply. Beyond March 2020, service leavers interested in FE teaching will be able to draw on support from the FE Advice Line and will be signposted towards other opportunities (and associated financial support) to undertake teacher training. 

 

 

 

There is no cost to for you undertaking this programme. The total cost of training, including mentor support, will be provided by the Education and Training Foundation and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.
